Frequently asked sports rules questions

Quick answers to the questions our readers ask most often.

What is the difference between NFL and college football rules?

The two rulebooks differ on how many feet must land in bounds for a catch, the overtime format, pass interference penalties, clock-stoppage rules, and hash mark placement on the field.

How does the cricket Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method work?

DLS recalculates the target score in a rain-shortened limited-overs match using a statistical model that accounts for the overs and wickets each side has remaining.

What exactly is the offside rule in soccer?

An attacker is offside if, when a teammate plays the ball to them, any body part that can legally score is nearer the goal line than both the ball and the second-last defender, and they take part in the play.

How does the NBA luxury tax and salary cap work?

The NBA runs a soft cap: teams can exceed it using exceptions, but those over the luxury-tax line pay a penalty that climbs for teams that stay over repeatedly.

What is the MLB designated hitter rule?

The DH lets a team use one player to bat in the pitcher’s spot for the whole game. Since 2022, both the AL and NL use it.

How do penalty shootouts work in football?

Each side takes five kicks in turn; a tie goes to sudden death, one kick per side per round, among players on the pitch when the match ended.
